Leo Babauta – Wywiad z autorem blogu Zenhabits

I know that you have many fans in Poland as well, but could you tell a few words about yourself to the people who aren’t familiar with your works?

I’m just a regular guy (34 years old, married, father of six) who discovered the power of small habit changes and simplicity a couple of years ago, and it transformed my life. I quit smoking in November 2005 and then used that success to take up running. From those two habit changes, I learned some amazing things. Within a year, I had run a marathon. I had doubled my income, become a vegetarian, become organized and productive, started waking at 5 a.m., began eliminating my debt, lost weight, and started a blog.

Today that blog is one of the Top 50 blogs in the world, because I’ve been able to connect with others looking for that kind of change in their lives. Looking for simple, uncluttered lives filled with happiness and meaning. I live on Guam and spend every day with my children, with my wife, with my writing, my reading and my running.

When I started to read your articles I was amazed by your determination to simplify your life in every manner. Do you remember how it started? When you told yourself „enough” and „I have to make it simple”.

I read a book called „Simplify Your Life” by Elaine St. James (highly recommended). Her simple message appealed to me, and I looked around and found that I was doing too much, had too much clutter in my life, and was too focused on material things and on work instead of what mattered most to me. It’s been a long process of simplifying, but today I can honestly say that I lead a very simple and happy life.

On zenhabits.net you share very interesting and sometimes ground shaking ideas concerning everyday life. I have started to practice morning runs after reading your posts about morning routine and how you prepared to marathon. What about the other people? Do you get feedback from your readers that you somehow influenced their lives? How it feels to motivate people to become healthier and better?

I’m glad if I inspire people, because my readers inspire me to do better every day. It’s a two-way process. I get emails and comments every day from people who say that I’ve changed their life in some positive way, and it is tremendously gratifying for me. It makes all my work worth it, a thousand times over.

Polish blogs are constantly evolving and often pattern some ideas and concepts after the American blogosphere. Could you give us a hint, based on your experience, which things or subjects should be avoided? Did you ever make a decision about some changes to your blog or committed an article that you regret today?

I don’t regret things that I’ve written because I’ve remained true to myself. My advice is to forget about making money, because then you just worry about how much money you’re making. Instead, focus on writing things that come from within you, focus on loving your writing, focus on writing very useful posts that appeal to many readers. If you do that, it doesn’t matter if you make money or get a million readers — you will be happy with what you do, and that matters most.

It seems that it is to early to become full time freelancing blogger in Poland like you have recently. Could you tell our readers in a few words how did you manage to produce such high quality content over the years while working and supporting your family at the same time?

Well, I’ve actually only been doing it since January 2007. How have I written with high quality? I learn from everything I do — from running to writing to parenting to saving money — and I figure out what has worked for me, and I try to share that with my readers as much as possible. I think that learning from the experiences of others is very very useful. How do I still make time for my family? I make them a priority. Their time comes first, and the blogging comes second. So with the little time I have left for blogging, I try to make the most of that time.

How it is to be full time blogger? How do you work now? What is your daily working routine?

My day is much simpler these days. I do my exercise in the morning, and then write. I write for my blog and write my book. Then I finish by the early afternoon and focus on my wife and kids for the rest of the day. It’s a very rewarding life.

Tell us a little about your goals. Where do you see yourself and your blog in a couple of years?

I just want to keep doing what I’m doing and continue to enjoy my writing and connecting with readers. I don’t have any specific goals
– I just try to have fun and write the best stuff that I can. :)
